Settler's Park Extended Family Session

A Beautiful Evening at Settlers Park | The Extended Family Session | Plainfield, IL

Last Friday evening, I had the pleasure of photographing one of my favorite kinds of sessions, a multi-generational extended family gathering. Audrey reached out to book this session, and she brought along her whole crew: her own family, her sister and her family, and their parents. Three generations in one frame. It really doesn't get more special than that.

They chose Settlers Park in Plainfield as the location, and honestly, it did not disappoint. Now, here's something I didn't know going in, it was prom night, and the park was packed! There were students, families, photographers everywhere. But we made it work, found our spots, and honestly the energy in the air was kind of fun.

The weather was on our side too. It was a warm evening, the sun was out, and a few clouds rolled in at just the right moments to give us that soft, dreamy light that photographers dream about. Those clouds were a blessing in disguise, they acted like a natural softbox and made every shot glow.

What really made this session stand out was the color palette the family chose. Denim blues, warm tans, and clean whites. Against the lush green grass and the limestone textures of the park, it was chef's kiss. Everything complemented the background so naturally, like it was all planned by a designer. That's what happens when a family puts thought into their outfits, it elevates every single photo.

Photographing extended families is something I truly love. There's so much joy, so much laughter, and those in-between moments — the kids running around, the grandparents smiling at it all — those are the ones that make the most beautiful images.
